KFC — Mother’s Day DVC

#HappyMothersDay. A 48-second film for KFC Pakistan about the work that never gets filmed — the cleaning, the carrying, the quiet management of everyone else’s day. Made in a year when that load got heavier and less visible than ever.

Still from the KFC Mother’s Day film: a mother holding her daughter on the sofa, KFC meal on the table beside them

Mother’s Day advertising has a sincerity problem

The category default is a montage and a thank-you card: soft focus, a swelling track, a line about how much she means to us. It is pleasant and it is forgettable, because it tells a mother something she already knows is being said out of obligation.

The brief was for a brand that sits in the middle of family meals to say something a mother would actually recognise. So the film does not thank her in the abstract. It shows the day — the vacuuming, the fridge, the floors, the endless resetting of a house that other people keep un-setting — and only then arrives at the meal and the moment of being noticed.

KFC’s own line on the film put it plainly: a salute to the mothers who handled responsibilities and stress in such difficult times. The work was made to earn that sentence rather than just caption it.

How we approached it

01 Lead with the labour, not the sentiment

The emotional payoff only lands if the audience has sat through the work first. The structure spends its opening on the unglamorous routine, so the warmth at the end is earned rather than announced.

02 One house, one day, no voiceover crutch

Kept deliberately small and domestic. A real home, a real routine, and a cut that trusts the viewer — so the film reads as observation rather than a brand lecturing a family about family.

03 Let the brand arrive late

KFC enters as the moment the family stops and sits down together, which is where the brand genuinely lives. Product-first would have broken the premise the whole film depends on.

04 Built for a feed, not a TV break

Forty-eight seconds, a visual hook that works without sound, and a cut that holds on a phone screen — because this is where the audience actually met it.
